Is it OK for bathroom exhaust fans terminate into an Attic?
Is OK for bathroom exhaust vents to terminate in the attic. Â There was a period of time (some still do) when lots of builders considered the attic "outdoors."Â It did take time for builders to figure out that the attic environment is anything but "outdoors." Â If the attic was outdoors, the temperature and humidity would be the same as out doors and dew point issues would not be a concern. Â We now know that temperature and humidity can vary widely in the attic and the crawlspace this is why proper ventilation of attic and crawlspace is so important. Â We do not want to trap moisture in the attic but instead provide a pathway for it to escape and allow air flow to remove crawlspace moisture. Â If we terminate bathroom, kitchen and dryer vents into the attic or crawlspace we obviously risk introducing more moisture than even the best ventilation system can remove and what home owner regularly checks these areas. Even new construction homes have issues... fallen insulation, rodents, failed strapping just to mention a few....so get your crawlspace and attic inspected EVERY year. Could save you thousands not to mention keep your IAQ at at healthy level:)
